Recently, Vice Principal Henricks and several other SCS Administrators attended the National Leaders Conference in Vancouver. In this week`s #PostcardFromSCS, Ms Henricks highlights a little of what she learned.

The Grade 1 class stepped out to search for signs of spring today. (What a perfect day to do it!) Along for the discovery walk: Upper School Science Teacher Ms Sardone, who helped the curious Grade 1s discover all kinds of noteworthy signs of spring including a robin’s egg, and a type of flower no one in the class had ever seen before! 🪺🌱🪻

One way that SCS seeks to foster a school community where members are known and valued is via several types of student forums. These forums, which include Affinity Groups (open to members of a particular identity), Open Alliances (open to everyone regardless of identity) and Brave Spaces (focused on education) are designed to encourage ongoing learning and to develop authentic allyship and support EDI-related issues and topics. Affinity Groups allow community members who share a common identity or an aspect of their identity—usually one that is marginalized or non-dominant—to gather and talk in a safe space about issues and experiences related to that identity. The Asian Students Affinity Group (ASAG) and the Black Students Affinity Group (BSAG) are two examples of affinity groups currently meeting regularly.⁠

Recently, several students and staff identifying as APISA (Asian, Pacific-Islander, and South Asian) had the opportunity to travel to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the Asian Educators Alliance Student Conference. SCS was the only Canadian school in attendance – here’s a look at some of the highlights and key learnings from that experience!

Friday’s assembly was all about fun! Vice Principal Henricks mused about why we gather for assembly twice a week: “Assemblies are a time to come together and have a shared experience. We learn about important topics together…and it’s also key to come together just to have fun. That is so important for our wellbeing - and so as times get busy over the next few weeks heading to the end of the school year, please take time for fun, be silly, do things that bring you joy.” And that led directly into a very fun-filled, joyful rendition of SCS Name That Tune! 😎🫶🎉

It was one spectacular evening last Saturday, April 20 when the SCS Big Top rolled into town. A huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the Gala – by purchasing tickets to attend the fun, by sponsoring the event, or through donations of amazing silent and live auction items. Thank you all for “stepping right up” and supporting SCS! (We’re also extending a special shout-out to the Gala Committee for all their incredible work in bringing the three-ring circus fun to life.) 🎪❤️
